The description of this design in SierraGonz's own words.
As a person who is from Meso-America, I feel honoured to bring awareness to the great civilizations and allow others to feel represented through this medium.
The Ahuízotl (The Water Beast) is a legendary water creature in Aztec mythology. It resembled a small dog with shiny and smooth rubberlike skin with sharp spikes. Known as the guardian of lakes, whose purpose is to protect the fish therein. Sent by the rain gods to collect the souls of mortals they liked. Due to his close link with the water gods, victims of the Ahuitzotl were said to be destined for the paradise of the rain gods. It would use the hand on the end of its tail to snatch its prey from the water’s edge. It is described as living in deep pools of water, or caverns.
