About This Design
This summer, my family and I hiked around Devil's Tower in Wyoming. I read a sign explaining the legendary origin of the Tower, and knew I had to make a hat design basedoff it. This is such an unusual rock formation, that it's no wonder Native people passed down many oral traditions about the place. It was called Bear Lodge or Bear's Tipi, because so many bears lived nearby. (It was incorrectly translated to Devil's Tower.) The Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Crow and Kiowa people each have somewhat similar stories but with different details, but in general: it was once a much lower rock that grew out of the ground to save people on top of it from a giant bear. The long, straight cuts in the rock are from the bear trying to claw its way to the top. The shattered rocks at the bottom are the bear's broken claws. In winter, the Pleiades are right above the tower and represent 7 sisters or siblings that had been on top of the tower.
