About This Design
The Guilded Flicker is a large woodpecker found in the desert regions of Southwest U.S. Interestingly, they create their nests by pecking cavities in the upper portions of giant saguaro cacti. They must regularly defend their nests from predators trying to steal and eat their eggs. I would be “Flicked Off” too if I still had to defend my nest when I took the time to build it into a freakin’ cactus. For this design I wanted to take advantage of the horizontal crown canvas and use the crown itself to create the “cactus” that the Guilded Flicker looks out from, defending its nest. The visor represents the desert floor with a red under visor giving the design some pop, while referencing the red malar mark found on the bird’s cheeks.
