Recently, Minnesota updated their flag. It inspired me to take a stab at my state’s flag. As a very proud 6th generation Californian, I felt the weight of the challenge. I obviously simplified some of the illustrated elements, removing the “CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC” text. The grizzly is even more front and center but this time they’re also in the shape of a wave. The grass the bear is standing on is now in the shape of the Sierras in the background. To me, what’s cool about this design is that it still feels like to original flag while being updated.
