About This Design

This design has its roots in the season of Lent, the 40 day journey to Golgotha and the Crucifixion. "Golgotha" is Hebrew for "place of the skull." There are many stories about Golgotha. This hill itself was said to be skull shaped. The cranium-shaped rock at the top was said to be one of the gates to the netherworld. It is also said to be the place where the serpent's skull was crushed, where death lost its sting and was swallowed up in victory. This victory is represented by the thorny red rose, mirroring the serpentine shape, but ending above the head of the snake. This might seem like a macabre design for me, but that's the point. The idea of "Momento Mori" or "Remember you must die," is a long-held practice for Lenten preparation. In all you do, remember the end of your life and live your life accordingly. Remember your death, so you don't have to fear it. Even if you don't see the beauty in this design that I do, at least you might think it's a cool hat!
