Every morning, before the fishermen arrived and the tourists wandered in with their fries, he'd claim his post on the old rope piling and survey his kingdom—the weathered dock, the golden sunrise, the open water stretching out forever. Around here, the gulls don't share, and this one ruled the pier like he'd built it himself.
