A rookie sailor starts their career as a "pollywog." Only after a voyage taking them across the equator do they become a “Shellback,” initiated into the world of veteran mariners with a raucous ceremony. A shell-backed sea turtle references the term and tradition, with a salute the sailors before them and a look ahead to the next generation.
