About This Design

Tlacuatzin means opossum in Nahuatl. This design is a collaboration between my wife and me about a story we love. Legend has it that during pre-Hispanic Mexico, before humans knew fire, winters were cold and people were hungry. Until one day, fire burst from a star and fell to earth. A selfish old woman captured it and kept it for herself, refusing to share it. Humans began gathering to come to an agreement and steal the fire. However, the only one who offered to steal it was a little opossum. Everyone made fun of him, but he was sure he could steal it. So, the brave opossum reached the old woman's hiding place, approached the fire, stuck his furry tail in the fire, and ran back to the humans with his tail on fire to give them the fire they so craved. It is said that ever since then, opossums have had their tails shaved. It is really interesting to know that the opossum could be considered the Pre-Hispanic Prometheus.
